Fairy tales are as old as mankind. Yet they are not in the least outdated. From 17 June until 31 July ten contemporary artists show their modern vision on the ancient folks tale at Vonkel.
The renewed interest for fairy tales in times of crisis can be explained. Originally the epic stories containing an explicit moral offered ways to escape the harsh reality of every day.
Our time with its own ordeals such as economic instability, xenophobia, social disparity and a crumbling faith in religious institutions makes people long for a more beautiful, exciting or simply better life. The unprecedented popularity of Disney and the success of movies like ‘Lord of the Rings’ or the 3D remake of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ might be the best modern interpretations of the fairy tales of long ago.
SPROOK shows the painted stories of Vonkel artists Inge Aanstoot, Lisette Huizenga, Anne Meijer, Jessica Muller, Angeles Nieto, Maaike Nijlunsing, Erica Scheper, Greet Steenland, Myra de Vries and Yvonne Zomerdijk.
